If there are no complications for the mother and newborn, both are discharged 48 hours after a spontaneous delivery and 48-72 hours (2-3 days) after a cesarean section.

This trend is driven by efforts to increase safety (reducing the risk of infection in the hospital environment) and a faster return to the home environment.
