Anesthesiology Department at the Clinic of Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Neonatology

We are a team of experienced anesthesiologists and intensivists at the Department of Anesthesia, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care Medicine (KARIM), which provides anesthesia and treats serious complications in all gynecological and obstetric procedures at the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Neonatology of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and the General University Hospital in Prague.

As one of the few facilities in the Czech Republic, we provide:

administration of obstetric epidural analgesia 24/7,
we provide consultative services 24/7 for serious and complicated cases,
we care for patients in life-threatening conditions in our state-of-the-art resuscitation department (located in the main VFN campus, U Nemocnice 2).

What about food and drink before a scheduled procedure?

On the day of the surgery, you can still drink 200 ml of clear, non-carbonated fluids around 6 a.m. (ideally a special drink called Preop that you purchased). Up to 2 hours before the surgery (as instructed by the attending nurse), you may sip clear, non-carbonated water in a total amount of 200 ml per hour.

Do not eat for 6 hours before the surgery (unless you are undergoing gastrointestinal surgery, which may require longer fasting and preparation with laxatives). In the case of urgent or emergency procedures, the anesthesiologist will take the recommended safety measures during anesthesia induction.

Was iron deficiency in your blood detected during pregnancy?

If your hemoglobin level is below 120 g/l, we recommend taking an iron supplement. You will take the supplement preventively. Women giving birth at our maternity hospital with iron deficiency in their blood are closely monitored until delivery and during the postpartum period. Low iron levels can cause increased fatigue, may lead to fainting, and impair healing of postpartum injuries.
If your hemoglobin level is below 100 g/l, visit our anesthesiology clinic. We will determine the cause of the iron deficiency and discuss further treatment steps with you.

Cannulation Center

Our Cannulation Center will provide you with a suitable venous access in cases of oncology treatment (chemotherapy, administration of other treatments) or the need for parenteral nutrition, in consultation with your attending physician.

Pain Management Clinic

If you suffer from chronic pain, you can make an appointment at the Pain Management Center within our clinic.

With a referral issued at the gynecology clinic, schedule a preoperative examination and laboratory tests with your general practitioner 7-21 days before the planned surgery.

The anesthesiology clinic is intended for pre-anesthesia examinations, which are a standard part of the preoperative process. An examination by an anesthesiologist is necessary for the safety of each patient and to minimize complications during surgery and postoperative care. The anesthesiologist will review the preoperative examination by a general practitioner or internist, suggest any additional tests if necessary, assess the risks of general or regional anesthesia, and discuss the patient’s wishes and questions.
