Postpartum Advice for the First Six Weeks

These recommendations are based on generally known guidelines for a healthy postpartum period.

  • During the postpartum period, the cervix gradually closes, the uterus returns to its original size and position, and excess lining is expelled through lochia.
  • Lochia will continue throughout the postpartum period. Initially, it is bloody – it should not be heavier than a normal menstrual period. Gradually, it will become lighter and change to a yellowish or whitish discharge and may have a slight odor.
  • If the cervix is not fully closed and lochia is still present, there is a higher risk of infection. Therefore, it is important to: shower frequently, avoid baths or swimming pools, use one towel for the body and another for intimate areas, urinate often (every 2–3 hours), rinse intimate areas after each urination and bowel movement, always wipe from front to back (from vagina to anus), avoid sexual intercourse, and wash your hands frequently – after contact with pads, before touching breasts or the baby.
  • Breasts are also at higher risk of infection and may develop cracks – so-called fissures. Wash and disinfect your hands before touching your breasts, especially the nipples (many types of antibacterial soaps and wipes are available on the market).
  • During the postpartum period, try to eat normally, avoid overeating, do not consume alcohol, and do not smoke.
  • Most myths regarding diet during breastfeeding are no longer valid. You do not need to avoid fresh bread, carbonated water, legumes, or grapes.
  • A diet high in protein (healthy dairy products – yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.) is recommended, which also helps with swelling in the lower limbs.
  • Drink at least 3–4 liters of fluids per day.
