Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding has many benefits for both the baby and the mother.

For the baby, breast milk represents a complete and natural food. A healthy, exclusively breastfed infant does not need any other nutrition or fluids for the first 6 months of life. Breast milk also contains antibodies that protect babies from infection. It significantly reduces the frequency of middle ear and upper respiratory tract infections. It helps prevent diarrheal diseases, allergies, and tooth decay. It also contributes to the prevention of diseases later in life, including obesity and diabetes. Breastfeeding supports better brain and mental development in the child. Breastfeeding also helps protect against sudden infant death syndrome. Early attachment, starting within the first hours after birth, helps establish a strong bond between mother and child.

Breastfeeding offers many benefits for the mother as well. The hormone oxytocin, released during breastfeeding, helps the uterus contract in the first days after birth, reducing the risk of postpartum bleeding. It has been shown that breastfeeding lowers the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. It protects women from osteoporosis and helps prevent type 2 diabetes. It also helps the mother return to her pre-pregnancy weight. The hormone prolactin, released primarily at night during breastfeeding, promotes relaxation and sleepiness in the mother, helping her rest during frequent nighttime feedings. Women who breastfeed have a lower risk of postpartum depression.

Breastfeeding also brings practical and economic benefits. Breast milk is always fresh, at the right temperature, and free of charge. Your body produces just enough milk to meet your baby’s needs.
